This is just a quick little post and I think the infographic says it all.  Pretty much in a nutshell you spam and use unethical ways to game Google you’ll get crapped on.  No one likes to be crapped on!  Google had to do something, because there were so many private blog networks, spammers, and blackhatters that were just gaming their algorithm to achieve high listings on Google.  Here is proof!

It pays to be social and you might actually find that it’s funner than just trying to game Google and a better long term strategy into developing a business online.  SEO is not dead the game has just changed (not to mention a tad bit boring), but social media is the way to go so start learning it if you don’t already use it!

I am Garen Arnold and I approve this message.  Oh come on with the election coming up that was a tad bit funny, admit it!  Oh and to clarify not stating social media is boring, but doing SEO work is kind of boring at times.  Ok, I lied it’s pretty darn boring.  Why do you think I have to keep lizards around for entertainment when doing SEO work?  It’s to keep my sanity!

Being social to me Garen is more word of mouth marketing.

I mean if you have a friend that’s spreading the word about something you’ve shared and that’s getting the attention of their friends and then their friends then yeah. You’re doing much better then spending all that time on SEO so that Google can place you on their site.

I’m not knocking Google at all but people who knock social as being a powerful strategy in their marketing is just nuts. I get a whole heck of a lot of social media traffic to my blog and we’ll put that up against Google’s any day of the week.

    Great infographic.

I agree not some bot that retweets, likes, plus 1′s, ect. Actually having a network of people that will often talk to you and spread your content around. It’s funny the more Google announced being more social is affecting their rankings the more and more people try to game it. Yeah, I am starting to see that you can draw a lot of traffic via social media just vs Google.

Thanks for the complements on infographic. Going to submit it to myblogguest.com and help build links to my site. I think I am getting addicted to infographics.

    Hey Garen,

Great infographic. I think the penguin’s done the world a great favour – it’s allowing genuinely great content and the real good guys to get a look in.

One of my concerns about social media, though, is the pressure to automate it – some of those automated direct messages and tweets can be quite ‘spammy’. I realise people feel the need to do this, just to keep pace with the traffic, but I think it’s a shame.

But then I’m probably distantly related to your lizard – a bit of a dinosaur,

    Sue

PS Just spotted a slight typo at the bottom of you infographic you might want to fix (‘socail’) – hope you don’t mind my pointing it out, I’m happy for you to delete this bit of my comment.

    • Garen Arnold

Yeah, with Google announcing social being a big factor now will come the flood of blackhatters that come up with the latest thing to game Google. I don’t even read my DM because I get tons of spam. I have been getting the ones that say such and such has been talking about you here.

Thanks I will have to fix the graphic so there is no typo at the bottom :)

    Hi Garen,

yes the infographic says it all but I enjoyed to read your explanation of it, which helped to understand it more.

Interacting and commenting and sharing other people’s posts makes so much more sense.
    I also find I learn a lot.

    Cheers,
    Yorinda

    • Garen Arnold

      Hey Yorinda,

Yeah, it will take a longtime for people to realize this is how it is now. You can’t really just spam and get ranked for mega hard keywords anymore. Not to mention it’s a lot funner to be social. SEO is insanely boring! It can take so long to get a site ranked and get a ROI from it.

    Garen,

Your infographic says it all. Because I love social media, I totally agree. I delete people on social sites on a daily basis. I don’t mind someone trying to offer something, but if they are always doing it, they get blocked off my social networks!

Spamming gets you nowhere! I don’t know when these spammers will get that message because I’m sure they are getting deleted or blocked or even worse reported all the time.

Social media is just that – Social! Building relationships is something I just love doing. Hey, it’s good karma!
You have me laughing at the end of your post when you said ” Why do you think I have to keep lizards around for entertainment when doing SEO work? It’s to keep my sanity!” I can relate, but I have 3 dogs to keep mine he he.

I agree with you, Donna. We’re hopefully on the internet to make it, and the people around us, the better for having come in contact with us. I like Chris Brogan’s rule of thumb: share other people’s content and promote them 80% of the time, and share and promote ourselves 20% of the time.

      • Garen Arnold

        Steve,

That is a great rule of thumb sharing 80% others and 20% ours. I have been doing that and seeing great results :) It’s the giver that will come out ahead.

    Garen,
To me Social media is a way to cut through the clutter and actually broadcast to your target market, which of course is the exact opposite of Spamming. The numbers above from Google are astounding and even open your eyes wider to the possibilities. This goes to show you how much the Search Engines are paying attention to Social Media.

To me a very neat aspect of social media is the ability to research a subject, you can really zero in on results that mean something to you through a very quick search. Thank you Garen for the info.

    • Garen Arnold

Yeah, it’s amazing what social media can do. It’s a lot funner then seo too. You are limiting yourself by only using one method. I predict that Google might crack down on some sites that are trying to game them by using fake social buzz.

  • http://wflewelling.com Willena Flewelling

I don’t know if I will ever understand Google Penguin or Panda or anything else they’ve come up with. Sometimes I wish Google and FB were not so secretive as to what is acceptable on their sites and what is not. But with Google at least, it looks like they are continually moving in the direction of whatever it takes to minimize spam and encourage real interaction between people.

    Thanks for the infographic!

    Willena

    • Garen Arnold

Sometimes Google makes no sense to me at all. However, over the years I have seen them say one thing and do the complete opposite. I think they are doing an ok job of killing spam, but they open the doors wide open for negative seo. I think this going to be a huge problem in the upcoming year.

  • http://geeklesstech.com Steven Hughes

Social seems to be the new trend, and the stats are pretty telling in the infographic. With this method, however, you have to keep the content train moving. Well it’s suggested. Thanks for the reminder, have to have closer 80-20 instead of 90-10. Maybe its time for me to get back to blog engage. I didn’t do much with it last time I was registered. Have a good one.

    • Garen Arnold

      Hey Steven,

Yeah 80/20 is best. I hate when I see twitter or facebook pages that are updated every 3 min. That is spamming and I either delete them or block them. Yeah, I love blogengage great for syndicating content. I am pretty active there and have lots of buddies there. Lots of my post get published :)

  • http://blogformatting.com Delia

Nice stats and always great to have the visuals in place, I learn so much better through them.

I pay “some” attention to SEO but I admit I enjoy social media much more so I combine business + pleasure and I stay active (mostly on Facebook) to interact with people and learn how can I help them better.

Thanks for reminding me of blogengage. I stumbled upon it once and made a note to return to it later but haven’t had a chance to :)

    • Garen Arnold

      Hey Delia,

Have you used blogengage before? It great for syndicating your content. They have specials going right now :)

  • http://lydiajbrown.com Lydia Brown

Nice infographic Garen. I love social media and even though my seo skills need to grow more I have improved but still find that my traffic is coming from my friends and associates on my social media networks more so than other means.

    • Garen Arnold

      Hey Lydia,

My SEO is at an all time high and getting my social interaction up there too. Just so much to learn. I believe I have some of the best strategies though.

  • http://www.HealthyBabyBoomersNetwork.com Dr. Erica Goodstone

    Garen,

I took a great course a few years ago with Perry Belcher and Ryan Deiss. Perry described going to a barbecue at a neighbor’s house. He asked, “Would you show up and immediately try to enroll your neighbor in your MLM business?” Instead he showed how you would be better off to chat and be friendly and eat some food and then later, when someone asks you “So what do you do?” then you begin to explain your business. But you have engaged in conversation and made a meaningful connection first.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

    • Garen Arnold

Yeah good example. People get this so wrong. If your not going to be social why use Facebook, Twitter, ect. People will be more willing to communicate and work with you if you don’t try to sound like a used car salesman :).

This is once of the best and informative post i have read, some people are posting articles without knowing the basic step of communication and writing skills.
You have the ability and know the way of how to convince your reader to read the whole article, very creative post, just keep it going.
    Thank you :)

    • Garen Arnold

      Hey Mohammad,

One question I always ask is does my content deserve to be number one on Google :)
